Movie stars, I am here to tell you, look better than the rest of us, which I suppose is why they are in the movies and the rest of us are not. And of course there were a lot of movie stars to compare them to. Reagan in the flesh before, and it seemed to me they looked as good as any movie star, exactly the way a president and first lady are supposed to look these days. I can tell you that everyone looked pretty good Saturday night, too. A little hardship sharpens the senses, and it was, after all, the start of a New Frontier we were looking at. Everyone looked terrifically spiffy, though, especially the Kennedys, and everyone seemed to have a good time, too, despite the snow, or maybe because of it. Kennedy and a lot of other people late, but it was very difficult to report that because I had never been to the Armory before and the telephones were very hard to find. The only untoward incident was the blizzard, which made President and Mrs. Armory to report any untoward incidents at President Kennedy's gala, which was the first one. I had a seat in any event, courtesy of a California connection, and I seemed to be passing.) To be absolutely candid, I had been to this sort of thing only once before, when I had just climbed from the peonage of copyboy status at this newspaper and was sent out with a notebook in a blizzard to the D.C. (The truth is, I'm not sure I was actually, officially invited to this one, but I see no reason to split hairs about that. I was also, I have to say, quite excited because although I live in the capital city and have a police press pass I don't get invited to this sort of thing very often, and I'm as much a sucker for "Hail to the Chief" as the next person. Furthermore, I have a special fondness for jellybeans, and if President Reagan has done nothing else, he has made it possible to find a quality jellybean in Washington. That was very nice of them because I'd gotten to the Convention Center too late for the earlier major feeding and I was quite hungry. The jellybeans were kindly provided by the Inaugural Committee, which also gave me a bag of M&Ms (along with various non-edible items including a catalogue of commemorative souvenirs I could order for a price). Although the Battle of Britain may not have in itself been the decisive encounter that it has historically been portrayed as, the moral victory won by the RAF, the victory that proved that Germany could be defeated, was just as important as a military-strategic victory.By one of those random flukes that sometimes seem to rule my life, I found myself the other evening sitting seven rows behind the president at the Presidential Inaugural Gala and eating a bag of jellybeans for my supper. The myth of the fighter pilot will be humanized, with first-hand accounts quoted which put nervous but brave human beings from all walks of life in the cockpit. This title will put Fighter Command in context describing the lack of funding and attention which it received during the interwar period, until it was almost too late.

The recent 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, combined with the threat of significant cuts to the current RAF, have highlighted the importance of Fighter Command in the early days of World War II once more.
